Sokoto State Faces New Terrorist Group

A new terrorist group has emerged in Sokoto state. This was made known to the public through the statement issued by Idris Gobir, deputy governor of the state.

He warned that the new terrorist group is known as LAKURAWAS and it is sophisticated in weapon, adding that the group has spread up to five local governments areas in the state.

In a meeting with participants from Course 33 of the National Defence College, Abuja, the Deputy Governor disclosed this information while they were on a study visit to Sokoto.

Gobir noted that the group operates under a religious ideology and is armed with sophisticated weapons.

He said “Our assessment indicates that LAKURAWAS is active in approximately five local government areas throughout the state,”

Worried by the new development, he stated the state is already facing significant issues with banditry.

“The threat is growing,” he remarked, adding that security agencies are working hard to address this new challenge.

The Deputy Governor highlighted the ongoing collaboration between the state and federal security forces to protect lives and property. He also pointed out the various measures the state government has taken to tackle these security issues, expressing hope that insights gained from the National Defence College’s study tour would aid authorities in understanding the evolving threats and developing effective strategies for maintaining peace.

Air Vice Marshal Titus Zuwahu Dauda, who led the visiting delegation, provided context on the college, established in 1992 as Nigeria’s leading military institution. He mentioned that the college trains military, police, and strategic agency officers for high-level responsibilities, with a total of 2,982 graduates, including participants from 30 African and Asian countries.

Dauda also said that the delegation would compile report on their observations and recommendations for improve security in Sokoto state.
