The suspension of Hon. Ugochinyere Ikeagwuonu, a federal House member representing Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency by the Imo State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party could not survive the test of time as the national leadership of the party (PDP) has rejected the alleged expulsion.
A statement issued by the National Working Committee through Debo Ologunagba, the National Publicity Secretary, has declared the expulsion as null and void, citing inconsistencies with the party’s constitution and rules.
The drama surrounding the purported suspension began when the Imo PDP Publicity Secretary, Lancelot Obiak, announced that Ugochinyere was expelled by the executive of the PDP in Ideato LGA over allegations of gross indiscipline, insubordination, and anti-party activities.
In a swift reaction, the PDP national leadership has maintained that no ward, local government, or state chapter of the party has the power to suspend, expel, or discipline a member of the National Assembly without seeking the knowledge of the National Working Committee.
As the axe dangles in favour of Hon. Ugochinyere, the 27 council PDP chairmen in Imo State have unanimously declared Hon. Ugochinyere as the leader of the party.
The declaration comes after a critical check on the positions PDP political officer holders have in the state and it was discovered that he is the highest elected political officer on the platform of PDP in Imo State.
A statement signed by Coordinating Chairman of the 27 Imo PDP LGA Chairmen Forum, he urged stakeholders and lovers of PDP in the state to support the outspoken and promising lawmaker in his bid to rescue the party from going into extinction.
Their words “We the leaders of PDP in Imo state after wide consultations and deep reflection on the state of our party in the state and the country, resolved to appoint the member representing Ideato North/South Federal Constituency of Imo State in the House of Representatives, Hon. Barr Ikenga Ugochinyere as our leader.
“This is based on his antecedents, sterling leadership qualities and commitment to the protection and promotion of the ethos of our party over the years. Judging from his ingenuity, we are confident in his ability to be the rallying point of PDP in Imo state for the party to rebound ahead of future polls.
We therefore urged stakeholders in the party to rally round him and give him all the support needed to succeed in the task of rebuilding our party into a virile force to be recon with.
