FCT MINISTER CRACKS DOWN ON UNAUTHORIZED STREET NAMING

By Cyprian Ajah

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has warned Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) Chairman Christopher Maikalangu against naming roads and streets in the city centre without approval. Wike made the declaration during the flag-off ceremony for new road networks in Guzape District.

The minister condemned the practice of naming major roads after private individuals without merit or public service, stating that only those who have made significant contributions to the nation’s growth or FCT development deserve such recognition. He limited street naming after private citizens to satellite towns, where AMAC is responsible for infrastructure and services.

Wike ordered Maikalangu to refund fees collected from individuals who paid for street naming in the city centre, emphasizing FCT Administration’s control over administrative decisions. He stressed accountability and proper governance in the capital city, amid efforts to standardize urban planning and restore order.
