ASUU SUSPEND TWO-WEEK WARNING STRIKE

By Cyprian Ajah

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its two-week warning strike, effective from midnight, October 22, 2025. The decision was reached after an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, where the union considered the progress made in negotiations with the Federal Government.

The suspension is a result of fruitful engagements between ASUU and the government, as well as appeals from concerned Nigerians, including students, parents, and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, stated that the union acknowledged the government’s return to the negotiation table and decided to review the strike action.

ASUU has given the Federal Government a one-month ultimatum to address outstanding issues, including:
Conclusion of the Re-negotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement.

Finalizing the agreement to improve university funding and lecturer welfare.

Payment of Withheld Salaries and releasing withheld salaries to affected lecturers.

Revitalization of Public Universities, addressing infrastructure and funding challenges facing public universities.

If the government fails to meet these demands within the one-month window, ASUU has warned that it will resume strike action without further notice.
